About Section Guide

The About section is your resume's first impression. It tells recruiters who you are, how to reach you, and why they should keep reading.

What to Include

Name

Use your full professional name as it appears on official documents. This helps with background checks and professional consistency.

  • Use the name you go by professionally
  • Include middle name or initial if commonly used
  • Avoid nicknames unless they're your professional identity

Title

Your professional title or the position you're targeting.

For job seekers: Use the title of the role you're applying for For career changers: Use your target role, not your current one For students: Use "Recent Graduate" or your target entry-level title

Contact Information

Email: Use a professional email address. Avoid outdated providers or unprofessional usernames.

Phone: Include country code if applying internationally. Use a number where you can be reached during business hours.

Location: City and country/state is sufficient. Full address is not necessary and can raise privacy concerns.

Professional Summary

This is your elevator pitch - 2-4 sentences that capture your value proposition.

Formula: [Years of experience] + [Key expertise] + [Notable achievement] + [What you're looking for]

Entry-level example: "Recent Computer Science graduate with hands-on experience in Python and React through academic projects and a summer internship. Built a task management app used by 200+ students. Seeking a junior developer role where I can contribute to user-facing products."

Mid-level example: "Marketing manager with 5 years of experience driving B2B growth through content strategy and demand generation. Increased qualified leads by 150% at my current company through targeted campaigns. Looking to lead marketing efforts at a growth-stage SaaS company."

Senior-level example: "Engineering leader with 12 years of experience building and scaling technical teams at startups and Fortune 500 companies. Led the development of a platform serving 10M+ users. Passionate about mentoring engineers and building inclusive team cultures."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Generic summaries - "Hard-working professional seeking new opportunities" says nothing
  • Too long - Keep your summary to 2-4 sentences
  • Outdated contact info - Double-check your email and phone
  • Unprofessional email - Create a new one if needed
  • Missing links - Include LinkedIn at minimum
  • Objective statements - These are outdated; use a summary instead

Pro Tips

  • Tailor your summary for each job application
  • Use keywords from the job description naturally
  • Have someone proofread your contact information
