  • Degree - Type of degree and field of study
  • Start and end dates - Or expected graduation date
  • Highlights - Relevant achievements, coursework, or honors (optional)

Tips by Experience Level

Students and Recent Graduates

Education is your strongest section. Make it count:

What to include:

  • Degree, major, and minor
  • GPA if 3.0+ (or equivalent)
  • Relevant coursework (especially for technical roles)
  • Academic honors and awards
  • Relevant extracurriculars and leadership
  • Study abroad experiences
  • Thesis or capstone projects

Example: State University Bachelor of Science in Marketing | Expected May 2025

  • Relevant Coursework: Digital Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Marketing Analytics
  • Marketing Club President: Led team of 15, organized 4 industry speaker events
  • Senior Project: Developed social media strategy for local nonprofit, increasing engagement by 200%

Mid-Level (3-7 years)

Education supports your experience, not the other way around:

What to include:

  • Degree and institution
  • Graduation year
  • Notable achievements only if exceptional
  • Skip coursework unless directly relevant

What to skip:

  • GPA (unless exceptional and relevant)
  • High school
  • Detailed coursework
  • Minor activities

Example: University Name Bachelor of Arts in Economics | 2018 Magna Cum Laude

Senior-Level (8+ years)

Keep it minimal - your experience speaks for itself:

What to include:

  • Highest degree and institution
  • Year of completion
  • Executive education (MBA, certifications from prestigious programs)

What to skip:

  • GPA
  • Coursework
  • Undergraduate activities
  • High school

Example: Business School Name Master of Business Administration | 2015

University Name Bachelor of Science in Engineering | 2010

Career Changers

Highlight education relevant to your new field:

What to include:

  • Recent certifications or courses in target field
  • Relevant coursework from any degree
  • Bootcamps or professional training
  • Online courses from recognized platforms

Example: Coding Bootcamp Name Full Stack Web Development Certificate | 2024

  • 500+ hours of hands-on coding in JavaScript, React, and Node.js
  • Capstone: Built e-commerce platform with payment integration

University Name Bachelor of Arts in English | 2018

  • Relevant: Technical Writing, Data Journalism

Special Situations

Currently Enrolled

Use "Expected" for graduation date: University Name Bachelor of Science in Data Science | Expected December 2025

Incomplete Degree

You can still include it: University Name Coursework toward Bachelor of Arts in Psychology | 2018-2020

  • Completed 75 credits before transitioning to workforce

Multiple Degrees

List in reverse chronological order (most recent first):

Graduate School Master of Science in Data Science | 2023

Undergraduate University Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics | 2020

Online Degrees

Treat them the same as traditional degrees. The format is identical. If the program is from a recognized university, it carries the same weight.

International Education

Include the degree equivalent if helpful: University Name, Country Bachelor of Engineering (equivalent to BS in Engineering, USA) | 2019

What About Grades?

Include GPA if:

  • You're a recent graduate (within 1-2 years)
  • It's above 3.0/4.0 (or equivalent)
  • The employer specifically asks for it
  • It's notably high (3.5+ is safe to include)

Skip GPA if:

  • You have 5+ years of experience
  • It's below 3.0
  • You have stronger selling points

Alternative Metrics

  • Class rank: "Top 10% of graduating class"
  • Honors: "Graduated with Honors"
  • Latin honors: "Magna Cum Laude"

Including Coursework

Only include coursework if:

  • You're entry-level with limited experience
  • The courses are directly relevant to the job
  • You're changing careers and took relevant classes

Format: "Relevant Coursework: Course 1, Course 2, Course 3"

Keep it to 4-6 courses maximum.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Including high school when you have a college degree
  • Listing every course you ever took
  • Including low GPAs - if it's under 3.0, leave it off
  • Outdated certifications - keep it current
  • Too much detail for senior professionals
  • Inconsistent formatting - dates and structure should match

Pro Tips

  • Put education before experience if you're a recent graduate
  • Move education after experience once you have 2+ years of work history
  • Keep certifications in a separate section if you have many
  • Update expected graduation dates as they approach
  • Remove graduation dates if concerned about age discrimination (10+ years out)
